Skiing hut to hut in Oregon's Central Cascades, Bend to Sisters
To celebrate my birthday in March 2025, we completed the 22-mile ski traverse over 3 days, staying at 2 of the Three Sisters Backcountry huts. This is a self-guided route along the eastern boundary of the Three Sisters Wilderness, sometimes following the Metolius Windigo Trail. The average elevation is 6,500 feet.

| First day! |
We were dropped off by the Three Sisters Backcountry team at the Dutchman Flat sno-park near the Mount Bachelor ski resort and embarked on our trip back to our car waiting at the Three Creeks sno-park near Sisters, Oregon. The route passes through old growth hemlock forests, burnt pines and hidden meadows. Gently rolling terrain, sunny skies except for one stormy day, and finally expansive views of the Three Sisters and Broken Top. The ungroomed snow was ideal for my Altai Hok ski setup with telemark boots and bindings, though I did need to apply moleskin after the first day. We occasionally needed to break trail; the route however was well-marked. The huts were well-equipped and stocked with breakfasts and dinners, so we were able to travel with light packs. While there were no downhill turns, the final day's journey featured a long downhill glide to the Three Creeks sno-park which went quickly!
