Skiing Middle Sister
We spent the summer solstice (June 20-22, 2024) camped in the Three Sisters Wilderness in order to ski Middle Sister. Little did we know that we had selected prime mosquito season! While the camping was not enjoyable due to the ferocious swarms of mosquitoes, the skiing was quite good though verging on mashed potatoes in the afternoon. We hiked in from the Pole Creek trailhead, to the Green Lakes trail then picked up the Camp Lake trail. Due to heavy snow coverage we abandoned our original plan to explore further along the Demaris Lake trail and selected a flat and spacious campsite by the north fork of the Whychus Creek. On our ski day we carried the skis over dirt and intermittent snow while wearing our ski boots, before being able to transition to skinning after maybe 1.5 miles of travel from our campsite. Skinning up the Hayden Glacier's gentle slopes - a blissfully bug-free zone! - was pleasant and scenic. We basked in the sun for a lunch break then enjoyed a few thousand feet of downhill turns. The actual summit seemed not worth pursuing from the saddle at the top of the glacier since the snow was becoming soft and mushy and our real interest was in skiing rather than peak bagging.
